1. What are medium and large formats, and why do you use them?

The simple answer is that Medium and Large Format cameras produce a larger negative, and thus, in the right hands, result in a better image quality than miniature (35 mm) or digital (which has a similar or slightly smaller frame) formats. To quote: “Larger formats can deliver more detail, better tonality, and everything else that is generally described as ‘quality.’”

  1. What should I wear for my portrait session?

Generally, any color you like is acceptable, but we would suggest avoiding loud stripes and other busy patterns. For fine, classic portraits we recommend avoiding street or casual wear.

  1. How long will my portrait session last?

In general, you can plan on your session lasting around one hour, give or take a few minutes.

  1. Why don’t you use props in your portrait sessions?

We do not use studio props or garish backdrops in our portrait photography as we feel it detracts from the classic style of a portrait you can be proud of for years to come. However, if there is an object that would tell the viewer something about our sitter, or is an important part of his or her identity, then it is very important to include it. For example if Mr. A is a musician, then it would be very important to include his instrument. Similarly, if Miss Y is a painter, then we would make every effort to include one of her paintings or tools of the trade in the portrait.

  1. Can I bring my pet along?

We love pets here at Hill’s Photography! It’s been our experience that many pets (particularly cats) do not enjoy being taken to a new environment, like a studio, and don’t cooperate very well. In order to photograph you and your furry friend we would prefer to have the session in your home, or at another location where you all feel comfortable. Remember, there are no extra charges to travel within our service area!

  1. Why do you have a fixed shooting schedule for weddings?

Firstly, to make the process as easy as possible for the bride and groom and all involved. Secondly, we feel that today’s common photojournalistic style is a trade-off of quality for quantity. Our shooting schedule is based on the best of the past’s classic wedding photography and our research among brides and brides-to-be.

  1. Can the shooting schedule be changed?

We can make reasonable adaptations to the schedule during our consultation. Additions to the schedule must be made in multiples of two, a nominal fee will be assessed for additions. The schedule may not be shortened.

  1. What must I do to reserve my day? What are your payment policies?

We require a minimum 40% down payment to reserve a wedding or event date, payment plans may be made, but the full amount must be received 30 days before the wedding/event date. For portrait sessions, our retainer must be received at the time the appointment is made, the balance being due at the time of the session.

  1. What if you don’t have a package or service that fits my needs?

We would be happy to meet with you in person to discuss how we can best help you and provide you with a cost estimate.

  1. Why should I choose Hill’s Photography?
